i was diagnosed with it a few months ago,
but i have/ always had a very high self esteem.
i’m curious why people with ADHD supposedly have a low self esteem.
most of the time.
?
I have a very close friend that was diagnosed with ADHD and I think she is one of the coolest people you would ever meet. But I think at an early age people that show ADHD traits are constantly reminded that they are different then the rest. I am sure after a while hearing why can’t you just do this like the rest of us must take a toll on your self esteem. But I think the uniqueness of some people with ADHD is a remarkable thing.
Thanks for answering my question earlier
I have ADHD (non-hyperactive) and I was depressed a lot because I saw everyone else going through school like it was nothing and I was struggling not to fail. I felt like less of a person when it came to school, I might be alone in this but, I doubt it. I would forget about asignments and other things and then when it was time for them to be due I would look like I didn’t give a shit about my grades when deep down inside I was ashamed to no end.
… It’s different person to person when they say it’s a symptom that doesn’t mean everyone has it, just that it could be related.

Maybe you were misdiagnosed and have something else.

2 theory’s 1) Life is harder. You typical have to work harder at school to get worse grades, harder to get a job. Sometime ppl are annoyed by ppl with AD(H)D making it harder to make Friend and be in relationships.
2) With any mental disability it has to do with chemical imbalances in the brain and all that kinda Technical stuff. Depression has to do with chemical imbalances in the brain and what not. Emotions and feels are something taken in ‘differently’ and can effect ppl with ADHD in a negative way.
Did that kinda make sense??

Low self esteem is not a symptoms onf ADHD but it can be a result of ADHD. many people with ADHD do have very, very high self esteem but some find that constantly struggling to succeed at school, being in trouble all the time and having social problems can cause low self esteem.

I don’t believe the low self esteem is a symptom of ADHD, but I think it’s a result of it. What I mean is, when I went through school I was always told i would never become any thing, and that I was lazy. Obviously, years of that can take a toll on your mental health.
It wasn’t until I got away from my family (those who thought I would be a lazy drain on the family the rest of my life) and joined the Air Force that I saw what I could become.
Now? Confident and smart with a job that most people would wish they could get, a network engineer with a world wide networking company!
So, it’s not because of the disease, it’s because of society.
I’ve started documenting what I went through as a kid, and though the many many jobs that I’ve held. Take a look if you want. I’d like to hear other peoples stories, so please feel free to comment on my blog.

Several studies indicate that adhd and low self esteem have a correlation but no causal evidence indicates that self esteem and adhd have a relationship. I have two children who have add and adhd and both have battled with low self esteem as well. A few months ago i read into this relatively new treatment called Neurofeedback or EEG Biofeedback which treats many mental irregularities including both previously mentioned. I live in the LA area so i found http://seanpakdamanphd.com/ which has several licensed Neurofeedback technicians and a well established clinical psychologist who tremendously helped both of my children. I suggest if you or anyone you know has either problem you look further into this new treatment.
